How COVID-19 is affecting sports coverage

The past two weeks have been very chaotic in the world. With many restaurants and schools closing, events being postponed or cancelled, and many people working at home to prevent the spread of this coronavirus. Not only this has been chaotic for people in the world, but it has been very chaotic in the sports world.

Before the Utah Jazz and Oklahoma City Thunder tipped off their basketball game, the Thunder medical staff member ran on the court to tell the referees to not play the game, as a player on the Jazz was tested positive for the Coronavirus. That player was Utah’s center Rudy Gobert, who was not going to play that night due to illness. The game was cancelled, and the NBA season was suspended an hour later.

Since then, NHL, MLB, XFL have all suspended their season, the NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournament have been cancelled, the Boston Marathon and the Masters golf tournament have been postponed, and just recently the 2020 Summer Olympics have been postponed to next year.

With sports being put on hold, it makes it difficult for journalists to cover sports. It takes a big effect, as it makes it difficult to know what talk about for their shows or write for their companies. For example, ESPN is currently been non stop talking about the NFL Free Agency, as it is the only thing to talk about for sports. When they aren’t talking about the NFL Free Agency, ESPN is playing playback games and old 30 for 30 documentaries. Personally it is not a bad thing to watch some of these old 30 for 30 documentaries, but as time goes on, they are just going to be replaying the same thing over and over, and they are going to lose viewers.

This is going to be nightmare for TV companies like ESPN, Fox Sports, and many others as they are going to lose TV viewers and money as there is no sports going on right now. I understand on why many leagues are suspending or cancelling their seasons to help the virus to not spread, but this means no sports for the next 2-3 months.

I think that if you are a journalist covering sports right now, you have to really dig deep and find creative stuff to talk about. Whether it is showing throwback games, talking sports history, or doing creative stories on how it affects athletes.

We hope that soon, they will find a cure for this disease, and that everything can return to the normal. If you think about it if the NBA, NHL, and many other sports leagues all return this summer, your summer is going to be entertaining with lots of sports.

Stay safe, stay home, and WASH YOUR HANDS!

Meeting Devin Booker the night he scored 70 points

Three years ago today, we saw a 20 year old shooting guard from the Phoenix Suns named Devin Booker drop 70 points in a 130-120 road loss to the Boston Celtics. It was a game that didn’t really matter, The Suns were bound to have a lottery pick the upcoming summer, while the Celtics were trying to stay at the top of the Eastern Conference standings. Even though the Suns lost, it was one of the coolest scoring performances I had ever watched.

I was at TD Garden when Booker scored 70 points. My family likes to rent a suite at the Celtics game every year, and invite friends and family members to join us. We got to go in the Garden two hours early, which gave some of my friends and I to go down near court side and get some autographs. We got a really good spot, and were able to get a couple of Suns and Celtics players autographs.

Some of the guys we able to get were Jaylen Brown, Terry Rozier, Dragic Bender, Brian Scalabrine, and many other players that I can’t remember. Then one guy who we were all hoping to get his autograph walked out of the Suns tunnel to get some shots up. That guy was Devin Booker. Everyone started to come over to our side of the court to try and get his autograph. After he got his shots up, he started walking towards our way. We were all praying that Devin Booker would grab our hat and ticket, and sign his autograph. And lucky enough he did.

Not only that we were able to get his autograph, but my friends and I also got to take a very quick picture with him.

You can tell that Devin really wanted to go back to the locker room, but we had to prove to people that we met Devin Booker lol. That made our night successful getting his autograph, and we were able to enjoy watching the game.

We were all talking about how we met Devin Booker walking back to our seats, and I remember a friend of mine saying “What if he just goes off and scores 40 tonight?”

As we watched the game from our suite, The Celtics were absolutely dominating the Suns. The Celtics were up by 20+ and Isaiah Thomas was doing his thing like he always did in Boston. As the Celtics were dominating, Devin Booker was quietly putting together a nice half, as he had 19 points. After seeing that at halftime, we started to think there could be a chance he could score 40.

The second half starts, Celtics are still blowing them out, it is starting to get a little boring, but Devin Booker kept us awake the rest of the game. He eventually eclipsed the 30 point mark, and then in the early 4th quarter he scored his 40th point. We were all pretty impressed, and all the jokes starting coming out as “What if he scores 50?”.

Booker continued to stay hot, and scored his 50th point. At that point we were just amazed on how he was doing that. At that point, we thought he was going to be done as there just was no way he was going to score 60 points. He stayed in the game even longer, and scored his 60th point on the night. That moment was when everyone in the arena stood up to cheer on Booker in hopes maybe he could score 70. I remember Brad Stevens bringing back some of the starters to slow him down, but that just didn’t seem to work.

Booker stayed on fire, making every single shot he took shot on the floor. He passed the Sun’s all time scoring record and with about less than a minute away, he was two points away from 70 points. We were all screaming and yelling for Booker to score his 70th point. Everyone in the arena was doing the same thing.

Booker got the ball, and got fouled shooting the ball. He went to the line and sank two free throws to score his 70th point on the night. Everyone went crazy, Suns players were celebrating like they won an NBA title, and the Celtics ended winning the game by only ten points.

The Suns were really bad, but for Devin Booker to score over half the team’s 120 points was crazy. Booker walked out of TD Garden as a legend. A 20 year old scoring 70 points in the NBA was not heard of. I bet if he went into the game hoping to score a lot of points, I bet he could’ve 80 or 90 points. That night he was feeling it, and was one of my favorite Celtics games I had ever watch.

Even though the Suns lost, it is one of the most memorable games in Suns history.

Todd Gurley gets cut by Rams, signs with Falcons

Running back Todd Gurley was shockingly cut by the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday. After being cut, Gurley went on to sign a one year/$6 million contract with NFC contender, the Atlanta Falcons.

This was a shocking and stupid decision by the Los Angels Rams. This guy was the 2017 Offensive Player of the Year and was one of the main reasons why the Rams made it to the Super Bowl in 2019. Now after being the face of the franchise, they decided to cut him.

I know they were looking to trade him due to salary cap issues, but still should’ve kept a hold of Gurley or traded him away somewhere else. Instead you are just cutting him from the team to get nothing in return.

Todd Gurley might’ve not had the best season last year, but this guy is still a good running back. I personally think this will hurt the Rams, but they could still be a good team.

For the Falcons, this makes them a tough team in the NFC with a powerful quarterback in Matt Ryan and a dominant receiver in Julio Jones. This could mean a lot of yards and touchdowns this season for the Atlanta Falcons in hoping to bring the team back to the Super Bowl.

Tom Brady officially signs with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tom Brady officially announced on his Facebook on Friday that he is signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a two year/$50 million contract. Brady leaves the Patriots after twenty years with the organization.

Well it is official guys……Tom Brady will not be wearing a Patriots uniform next season. As much as I hate to see this, I wish Tom the best of luck in Tampa Bay.

Brady will be throwing to some offense power in Chris Godwin and Mike Evans who had over 1,100 yards each last season. There is rumors that Antonio Brown and Tom Brady want to team up and play together, but we will have to see what happens.

People are saying that this makes them Super Bowl contenders, but I personally disagree. There is a lot of good teams in the NFC with the 49ers, the Packers, the Falcons, the Saints, and many others. I personally think they could have a shot in making a playoff game, but I don’t see them going far if so. Brady did not have the best year last year, and I believe that is the fact that he is getting older, it is starting to get to him. I would have love to see Tom Brady retire as a Patriot, but I personally think that this move was a money decision and a family decision. I don’t think the Patriots were going to pay a guy a lot just to play maybe one or two more seasons.

Regardless I love Tom Brady, and I hope he has the best luck in Tampa Bay. He lead the Patriots to six Super Bowl titles, which is unreal if you think of it. He is arguably the greatest quarterback of all time, and he hopes to prove the people wrong by trying to win a title with Tampa Bay.

Maybe the Patriots can get Cam Newton or Jameis Winston to replace Tom Brady??

Red Sox’s pitcher Chris Sale will undergo Tommy John surgery

Boston Red Sox’s starting pitcher Chris Sale will undergo Tommy John surgery on his left elbow, and will miss the entire 2020 MLB season. The surgery will take a 12-14 month recovery period as he could miss the start of 2021 season.

Well, this isn’t the news Boston fans were wanting to hear. First it was Mookie Betts being traded away to the Dodgers, then Tom Brady leaving the Patriots after twenty years for the Buccaneers, and now the Red Sox best pitcher is out for the season.

With the whole corona-virus stuff that is going on, we aren’t sure how this MLB season is going to look. But when the Red Sox take the field this season, it is going to hurt not having him out there on the mound.

Sale signed a five year/$145 million contract extension in 2019 after the Red Sox won the World Series in 2018. But now we are paying Chris Sale for a whole year to recover. It sucks, but I still don’t regret signing him to the extension. If he brought home a World Series title, it is worth the contract.

I worry this though, if things don’t work in 2020 for the Boston Red Sox, Chris Sale could be on the trade market. I am hoping that is not the case, because Sale is one of the most dominant pitchers in the league, butt anything can happen in a year.

The future for the Red Sox is going to be interesting, if they ever take the field.

Tom Brady announces he is leaving the Patriots

Free agent quarterback Tom Brady announced on his instagram Tuesday morning that he is leaving the New England Patriots and will be signing with another NFL team this off-season. Tom Brady, 42, spent twenty years with the organization, winning six Super Bowls with the team.

According to some reports, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Los Angeles Chargers are the favorites to sign Brady in hopes to win a Super Bowl.

It’s official guys, Tom is really leaving 😦

It is going to be so hard seeing Tom Brady wearing another uniform this season. Brady has done so much for the Pats, leading them to so many AFC Championships and Super Bowls. After all he has done for them, I would’ve thought he would retire being a New England Patriot.

Last season was a rough end to the Patriots, losing to the Miami Dolphins in the last regular season game of the year to miss a first round bye, and losing to to Tennessee Titans in the AFC Wild Card game. All the questions were asked if Brady was going to retire, but he responded by saying that is unlikely to happen.

As Tom is leaving the Patriots, the Buccaneers and the Chargers are desperate to get the quarterback for his last hoorah of his career. I personally feel like he will sign with the LA Chargers. I say this because Tom will be looking for a way to still compete for a Super Bowl and to make his family happy. Los Angeles is sunny, a popular place, and it is a place that Tom will want to get some money being on commercials, movies, etc.

The Buccaneers could have a strong run at him with a promising offense and living in the state of Florida, but Tom from California and will want to return near home to play football.

As much as it hurts to see Tom Brady leave the Patriots, he has given his everything for the organization.

Thank you Tom for all you have done for the organization, and you are the Greatest Quarterback of All Time, and I don’t care if people disagree with me on that, because it is FACTS!

No sports in eight weeks??

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) announced Sunday evening that Americans cancel or postpone gatherings of 50 or more people for the next eight weeks.

With this announcement that means the sports world will be put on pause for a little while longer. With this it means the NBA will be pushed back until around mid-June to play basketball without fans, The NHL not hitting the ice until the same time, or the MLB postponing the start of their season. Or will some seasons be cancelled?

What could happen next?

NBA

As the NBA season was near to end, before the season was suspended. My guess on what will happen is either the regular season will be wiped away and we will jump into the playoffs the way the seedings are, or worst case scenario is they cancel the rest of the NBA season. I’m not sure if they will crown an NBA champion or not, but that will put a lot of money on the line if they cancel the season. The G-League season will most likely now be cancelled according to NBA executives, but we will see what happens.

NHL

The NHL season could also be put on a hold a little bit longer or a cancellation of the season. As the Bruins are at the top of the division, if they awarded the Bruins as the champions, I would not be upset. As awesome as that would sound, it would not be fair at all if they won the tittle without playing in the playoffs.

MLB

As Spring Training has basically been cancelled, The MLB season could be starting a lot later than the original dates in years past. We could see the season starting in May or June. If the season starts later in the year, it means less baseball, and it means teams will be fighting for a playoff spot as every game is huge in the start of the season.

As there will be no sports for a while, I will be curious to see what ESPN, Fox Sports, and all these companies will do during this time. We could see a lot of play back games from the past, and the NFL free agency could be the most talked about thing for the next few weeks.

We can all say 2020 has not been the best year so far, we hope that people will continue to be safe and the cure for this virus will go away soon.

NBA suspends season; Jazz center Gobert tests positive for corona virus

Basketball will be put on hold for a little while. Due to the outgrowing growth of the corona virus, the NBA has suspended the season indefinitely. After many concerns regarding the virus, the NBA was in talks of playing games without fans. But that has immediately changed after the Jazz-Thunder game was postponed after Rudy Gobert was out with an illness and later on tested positive for the corona virus. The NBA will have more information on the situation in a later time.

Wow…..Can you believe this!?

Who would’ve thought that the NBA would be put on pause for a virus!? As we all know this corona virus has been talked about for the past week or two, and the more and more it seems to scare people. This was an absolute crazy day, we all saw at the beginning of the day that the Warriors and Nets game were going to be played without fans. When I saw that, I was surprised that it was starting to come to that point of having to play without fans, and I was just hoping that we wouldn’t see the same thing happen with March Madness. Well that is exactly what happened, as the NCAA announced that there will be no fans in attendance during the NCAA basketball tournament in March. I was getting kind of mad when I heard the news, because I felt like that this virus is scaring everyone and that it was going to ruin watching the atmosphere of watching NCAA tournament games.

All of a sudden when I was on the couch, I went on my phone and saw all these tweets going on about the Thunder and Jazz players leaving the court right before tip off. The reason why they left the floor, because they were waiting for confirmation if they could play the game, as there was concerns of the corona virus to the players sitting out of the game due to illness. Those two players were Rudy Gobert and Emmanuel Mudiay.

The Thunder and Jazz decided to postpone the game, leaving a lot of people shocked. About an hour or less, the NBA announced the season would be suspended after Wednesday night as Rudy Gobert was tested positive for the virus. Right then and there, I knew that this was something very serious and understood why they needed to put the season on hold. The Kings-Pelicans game was also cancelled as the ref for the game worked at the Jazz game earlier in the week, and the Pelicans did not want to come out and play.

I don’t know what is going to happen, this is all crazy stuff happening in one day. I’m not sure how long this suspension will be, it might be a week, a month, two months, or may even call it a season! I will be curious on how they will do the playoffs, if the NBA decides to pick up right where they left off and keep playing, or if they end the regular season the way it is and go into the playoffs as the current seeds. This will be something to keep an eye out for.

With this virus we have seen school’s switching to online classes, cancelling college spring sports, postponements of games, NBA season on hold, President Trump announcing no flying from Europe for 30 days, Tom Hanks getting the virus, No fans for the March Madness tournament, possibly other suspensions in other major events, and so many more.

I hope that there will be an end to this virus, and our thoughts and prayers are out to the people who are affected by it.

Schroder’s layup gets Thunder by Celtics

Dennis Schroder’s steal and layup with eight seconds left sealed the deal to give the Thunder a 105-104 win , and their 40th win on the year.

The Thunder were lead by veteran guard Chris Paul with 28 points, and Dennis Schroder coming off the bench with 27 points.

The Celtics were lead by Gordon Hayward who poured in 24 points, while Marcus Smart and Jayson Tatum chipped in with 19 in the loss. This marks the 4th straight loss at home for Boston, as they missed the chance to clinch a playoff berth.

My thoughts

Well this probably has to be up with one of the bad losses on the year for the Celtics. Boston had it in the bag, all they had two do was get fouled, make both free throws, and don’t foul them shooting a three like the Brooklyn game. But Kemba got his pocket picked and Schroder played it in for two to seal the win for OKC. The Celtics haven’t been playing well lately and it is time to get their act together.

Gordon Hayward I thought played really well tonight, along with Marcus Smart. Jayson Tatum was struggling a little bit tonight, and Kemba still hasn’t found his groove since All-Star break. It does hurt not having Jaylen Brown out there, because he is a guy that can fill up the scoring column along with Tatum, and right now we don’t have much offense.

I hate to say it, but Brad Stevens needs to give less minutes to Grant Williams and Brad Wanamaker. Those two are awful for the Celtics, don’t provide scoring and are just very inexperienced. Enes Kanter is a guy who rebounds well and can give you 10-12 points off the bench, but Brad doesn’t play him for some reason. Brad is trying to give these guys playing time to “prepare for the playoffs”, but let’s be honest if Brad plays the bench a lot in the playoffs, we are going to struggle when we take out guys like Tatum or Kemba.

The one thing I wish Danny Ainge did was bring in a scorer off the bench, we have no guys who can score off the bench. When Smart comes off the bench, he carries the Celtics bench in scoring. Kanter can give some points off the bench as well, but he isn’t a dominant scorer. Besides those two, everyone else can’t score, because they are inexperienced and rookies.

We need a guy like Isaiah Thomas or Jamal Crawford. Those are two guys who can come off the bench and can give you buckets. You look at these top teams like the Bucks, the Clippers, the Lakers, they all have a deep bench for when their best players check out of the game, they won’t miss a beat. The Celtics bench is a weakness for this team, and we need someone to step up and help the Celtics when they take Tatum or Kemba out of the game.

I am probably just saying all of this because I am a little mad on the loss, but I still believe in the Celtics. When everyone gets healthy, this team could be scary, but we NEED to improve our bench. The Celtics need that second seed in the East to get a good first round matchup, and to get home court if they advance to the semi-finals.

Next game for the Celtics is against the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday in Indiana. This is a huge game as the Celtics need a win to get back on the winning track.

Was trading Mookie Betts the right move?

A few weeks, the Boston Red Sox made a big blockbuster trade, trading away star outfielder Mookie Betts and pitcher David Price to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Along with the trade, the Red Sox received Alex Vergdugo, Jeter Downs, and Connor Wong.

Mookie Betts had one year remaining on his contract before entering free agency, while David Price still had a few years left on his huge seven year/$217 million that he signed in 2016.

With the Red Sox making this big trade in the middle of all this Houston Astros cheating drama, a lot of Red Sox fans are very upset that the Red Sox made this trade.

Mookie was offered a 10 year, over $300 million dollar contract in the offseason, but turned down the offer, because he said that he wanted to test free agency. So instead of the Red Sox keeping him around for another season, they pulled the trigger, and shipped him out to LA to play for the Dodgers.

With trading away Mookie’s 1 year/$27 million contract, and David Price’s gigantic contract, it clears up the salary cap with high hopes of a signing a big free agent in the summer of 2021.

But was it right the move?

Personally I think this was a TERRIBLE move.

Yes, the Red Sox didn’t have exactly the best season last year, they missed the playoffs, but it wasn’t awful. The starting pitchers had a down year, bullpen was terrible, and no closer. I felt like if the Red Sox made a few tweaks by adding some bullpen pitchers and closers, they would’ve been a title contending team again. TRADING MOOKIE WAS NOT THE ANSWER.

Mookie was a huge reason why the Red Sox won the title in 2018. Dominated the MLB by putting up big hitting numbers, a star gold glove outfielder, and winning the AL MVP.

By trading away the league MVP two years ago in his prime, was an awful decision that the Red Sox made. I feel like Boston traded away Mookie, because they did not want to pay the guy. When Mookie turned down that offer for Boston, it didn’t mean he wanted to leave Boston, he just wanted to test free agency. He knows that if he tests free agency, he is going to be offered a HUGE contract. My guess is his contract will be over $400 million dollars, when he is offered a contract in free agency.

I think Mookie was committed to Boston, and really wanted to stay, but he wanted to be offered the big contract by them in free agency or get offered a big contract by another team to convince the Red Sox to match the deal. The Red Sox were just too cheap to offer him the man, so they traded him away instead of keeping him. Boston should’ve been trying to build around him, not trade him for pieces. You could’ve kept Mookie and traded away other pieces to still keep this team solid. Like for example, they should’ve traded away David Price and Jackie Bradley Jr (Who has been in trade talks for YEARS) to get some solid bullpen pitchers or a closer in return.

People might be saying that Mookie isn’t worth the $400 contract, BUT HE IS. A guy who is in his prime, MVP, star Gold gloves outfielder, this guy is legit. People could respond on how Mike Trout and Bryce Harper’s contract hasn’t worked out, but hear me out on this. Mike Trout is worth the contract, because he is one of the most dominant players in the MLB. It is the Angels fault that they haven’t tried to build anyone around him. Bryce Harper has only played one year in Philadelphia, give him time, and FYI the Nationals had an awful amount of luck to win the World Series, and that is a fact to me whether you agree with it or not.

Mookie is worth that contract, because he has the pieces around him and he is an all-around star on the field. He has brought home a championship to Boston and that has proved to be worth a huge contract, especially if he is arguably one of the best players in the MLB. He is capable of winning a title, but it is too late as Boston has traded him away to the team that they beat in the World Series.

The Red Sox could sign him back in 2021, but I don’t think that will happen. We all said that about Jon Lester when we traded him to Oakland, but he still bailed and went to the Chicago Cubs instead.

I still will be rooting for this Red Sox team, and I hope that these guys they brought in will be good and bring in some wins, but the Red Sox made a bad trade trading away a star MVP.
